Guiding Principles
Companion Guide

As Marists, we participate in God’s mission, making Jesus known and loved. We continue to draw on, personalise and interpret the tradition of Marcellin Champagnat and the earliest Brothers, as a way of being attentive and responsive to the call of the Gospel and what the Spirit is asking of us today.

The Guiding Principles presented in the ‘As Marists’ booklet - arising from, and following, the conversations, consultation and discernment of the 2018 National Assembly - will come alive with our imagination and creativity. We are encouraged to break them open together. These three companion guides, consisting of three Principles each, offer a way for us to discover the possibilities and challenges for us in 2020 and 2021/2 as Marists collectively and individually, in the three key areas of Spirituality, Ministry and Spiritual Family

Community & Relationships is a conversation about the natural spaces where Marists experience meaningful connections with other people, as well as the deeply relational nature of Marist spirituality, inspired by the early Christian communities and the first communities of Brothers in 19th Century rural France.

Faith & Spirituality explores contemporary expressions of Christian faith, grounded in the Marist charism. Br David Hall, Marist Brother and Dean of La Salle Academy, Australian Catholic University, notes one expression of a Marist faith perspective: “…to live in the Marian way is to bring that God to birth in the world.”

Meaning & Mission, looks at where engagement with mission and personal meaning intersect. Anthony Mackett, a committed Marist and psychologist, summarises this junction: “[It is to]…bring the Marist values into the way that I work. So…[there is] authenticity, making others feel safe and comfortable.”
